West vs East in "M Butterfly" by David Henry Hwang

The play "M Butterfly" by David Henry Hwang depicts the characteristics of both west and east but in different ways. West as more of masculine, strong and trying to take control of everything but East as feminine and weak always listen to what westerner say. West is always considered as a most powerful empire from last few centuries and most of the oldest colonies controlled by the west existed in east such as Britain ruled over India and its surrounding countries for like two centuries and they did everything they could to destroy their vast cultural diversities.
But everything that's happening in this play is opposite of this as Song is from east and she has complete control over Gallimard. she took advantage of this westerner behavior always thinking themselves as superior and she tries to maintain this level of supremacy in her relationship with Gallimard as their relationship progresses and also made Gallimard think that he is the one who is controlling everything or dominating. But instead Song built so much affection between them that she insisted Gallimard to pass out every bit of information to her from U.S army activities in Vietnam. I am not doubting Gallimard or westerner whether or not he knew when he met Song that he was man even though they had sex many times and even Song quoted in his lines "he must've felt around?"(81). I think Gallimard was in true love which was not common in white people from West who usually married to a girl to full fill their lust and then they left them alone with some money so that they can catch fish from another pond as describe by Pinkerton in his quotes "When I leave, she'll know what it's like to have loved a real man. And I'll even buy her a few nylons"(6). So I think East in this described as growing force which knows how to work its way through powerful west this also signifies that East is tired of West supremacy describing them as weak and tries to come out as new power.

Recognizing internet pattern in "Pattern Recognition" by William Gibson

In "Pattern Recognition" by William Gibson, social network plays an important role in Cayce life as all the information she got even the small clue to reach up to Stella she got it with the help of her friends on her forum such as parkaboy and even her mom is not physically present in this novel because we don't get any direct dialogue from her mother all we know about her is from her emails sent to Cayce so we can say social network or internet help Cayce to be closer to her mom and tells reader what is going on between them. Even though Cayce doesn't like to read her mother emails because she always reminds her of her father and whether he died or not in September 11 attack . "He took a duck in the face, clossing her eyes./eventually she has to open her"(184) this quote of Cayce describes her attitude towards her mother and it signifies that internet helps their family bond to remain strong as if there would have been no email then they wouldn't have any contacts between them.
Another great example of social network in this novel is that it brings people from different and far away places closer it acts like a dryer because if you put clothes in dryer they start shrinking so I think in same way it shrink down the whole world. Cayce used forum in this novel as it is her body part and try to check her emails on every possible time she can get. Most of the information she gets in this novel is with the help of emails which parkaboy sends her everyday sitting in Chicago. Now the question arises from this is that how does she trust parkaboy as they never saw each other except at the end of this novel but she still believe in him more than the people around her. This amazed me when I just started reading the novel and made me doubt her trusting skills but at the end I was astonished to see that Cayce was right because all the people around her betrayed her and parkaboy instead stayed with her and ultimately Cayce ended up with him.
So we can say that social network is main thing with which all the knots are tied and Cayce uses that to find out about the mystery behind that segment. she even contacted Stella and Nora though the email she received and I think communication through their emails brought them so closer that Stella even invited her to meet with her sister even though that posses threat to Stella family "From anyone who might wish to use us to hurt him. You must understand, these precautions are not unusual, for a man like my uncle"(p307). Stella came to know more about Chayce through internet and she also finds out that chayce lost her father in terrible accident much like they lost their parents during bombing and ultimately Stella felt like Chayce is also one of them so at last she lets chacye to meet Nora.
